Happy 9th Birthday Facebook. Today nine years ago you came into existence and changed the world for better or for worse.
It feels like forever since Facebook was invented and just look at what has happened since that. The title wave of social media sites that have been produced and the way people perceive social media, or gather information for that matter, has totally changed and I for one think it’s for the better.
Look whats happened over the past decade in the world of social media. Facebook was obviously started and then sites like Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, etc…followed. Yes I know that technically MySpace was the one that started social media back in 2003, but that platform was never going to last, it was too childish. Kids in middle school and high school loved it, ate it up, but as time went by, people got over it and moved onto the next thing a year later….Facebook.
Unfortunately for MySpace, Facebook wasn’t just a fad, it was here to stay, and it continues to evolve and try to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to social media.
If it wasn’t for Facebook, sites like Twitter and LinkedIn might have never come about, and who knows how they would be operated or what they would be like. Facebook changed the way that not only kids, but adults can stay in touch with old friends from across the country and even the world.
With the addition of FB messenger or FB video calling, people can stay connected with one another from anywhere, at any time. With the addition of smartphone technology and increasing internet and cell phone connection speeds, people are literally accessible 24/7, 365, from anywhere. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing is still up in the air.
Facebook has not only been great for keeping friends connected, it has also changed the news industry forever.
I graduated college with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and in a lot of my classes, professors preached Twitter and social media and how it has changed the news industry forever and how it is another platform for people to get their news. Well Twitter, and social media in general, would never be where it is today if it wasn’t for the emergence, and continuing popularity of Facebook.
While Twitter, to me, is more where people can get their news by following news outlets like the NYT, the AP, or Yahoo News, Facebook is what started it and helped make a foundation for social media. Twitter came into the picture and put a new twist on how people get up to date news and information, and how social media can be conducted. If it wasn’t for that ground layer that Facebook laid, who knows if Twitter comes around and becomes what it is today.
So happy 9th birthday Facebook, thanks for changing the world for everyone, I can’t wait to see what you’re going to do next…..or what comes next in the social media world thanks of you.
